If you have to be saddled with a gearbox that shifts itself, why pretend that a plastic stick with electric switches is anything actually mechanical. Might as well be buttons.

Kinja'd!!!

Look at all that real estate opened up on the center console, and nothing is blocking the radio or HVAC controls.

Even automated-clutch gearboxes should just dispense with any fake stick on the console or steering column. It is all electronic, anyway.

Buttons on the dash, paddles behind the wheel. Just do it

Long time ago. Just prior to me getting a license, me and a couple of buddies would take mom's '63 New Yorker, with a push button shifter and a 413 4bbl, out to hoon the hell out of it. I liked that type of shifter.

I'm definitely okay with this. If it is going to be electronic, let us at least utilize some of the advantages of being electronic.

Agreed... If the car ain't a stick, don't put a stick in it; it just raises people's hopes for a second.

For the record, I kinda like Jag's rotary shifter:

I just started another discussion about that one... but it took me a while to find just the right images.

On the vertical part of the console, no problem. Jag's implementation still takes up horizontal console space, though, that could be used more space efficiently.

The lincoln's open console is so clean and sleek without any controls on the horizontal section, all up and closer to line of sight on the dash.

Lets get real here; no one who is willing to get a Lincoln today is doing it because they want three pedals. Those people want cushy soft bump absorbing convenience. So lets give as much as we can to them so they can get their dollars worth.

No, screaming "BUT YOU COULDA HAD A 3 SERIES MANUAL FOR THAT!!!" at them isn't going to do any good. Gotta live and let live here.
